The Nights That Dreams Are Scared Of
My Short Story in Brittle Paper’s African Horror Anthology
Intrigued by stories informed by our past, superstitions and those who raised us, I wrote my first light horror story last year, The Nights That Dreams Are Scared Of. I enjoyed tying in the little cautions we were told as kids and still sort of obey, even though we may laugh at and dismiss them. Inspired by my current location, I married Caribbean and Southern African superstitions in a diasporan setting: Dublin. I am delighted that the story was accepted for Brittle Paper’s African Horror anthology.
About the Story
Although Iggy is in Dublin, away from the juju and voodoo he was taught to fear, he knows how to act. He would never whistle at night, jump over anyone’s feet or sleep with his hands dangling off the bed.
Yet, despite his caution, he finds himself trapped in bed every night, his apartment overcrowded with nightmares and an absence sucking at his dreams.
